Recycling banks and centres

Prolonged closure of Swindon Road household recycling centre is now in place

Changing legislation and enhanced kerbside collection services have prompted a review of Cheltenham’s waste and recycling services. Cabinet members met on 26 November to discuss the future of the household recycling centre (HRC), which included agreeing a prolonged closure to the public whilst a full review of options takes place.

The last day that the site was open to the public before the prolonged closure was 10 January 2025.

Recycling banks

To complement recycling collections from home, there are a number of recycling bank locations across Cheltenham for recycling a greater variety of materials.

Plastic

You can recycle any plastic bottles, washed and squashed, such as shampoo, milk, detergent and bleach. A number of locations are now accepting mixed plastic - items such as yoghurt pots, margarine tubs, ice cream tubs, ready-meal trays and plastic fruit punnets as well as the full range of plastic bottles. However, this does not include any black-coloured plastic, plastic bags or cling film (or any other kind of film).

Card

You can recycle household cardboard only, which must be clean (no food contamination please) and folded flat.

Please place all items for recycling in the appropriate bin. If the containers look full please check, it is often the case that items just need to be pushed further in to the body of the bin. Please do not leave items outside the bin as this encourages fly tipping.

If a bank is full and needs emptying please let us know on 01242 264244.

Please remember to wash and squash any plastic bottles and rinse out your tins, cans and tubs!

There are multiple sites across the town that allow you to recycle your items. If the banks are full please do not leave any waste, instead we ask that you use one of the other sites available or alternatively use thekerbside collection service where possible.
